Counter-Strike 2: the FPS that will replace formalized CS:GO, gameplay and a beta to discover what’s new!

Monument of video games and online parties, counter strike has evolved in several forms since its creation in 1999, until Counter-Strike: Global Offensive which still regularly fascinates more than a million players simultaneously. Despite this enduring success, rumor had it that Valve go ahead by announcing an unexpected counter strike 2 this month.

This is today done : the publisher has just formalized Counter-Strike 2and this in the most laconic way possible, by broadcasting three videos explaining its technical innovations on its channel Youtube. Perhaps a way of saying that, before being a spectacular product, it will be an experience designed for fans, where the slightest technological innovation will be important.

Between tradition and modernity, the sequel will resume cult cardsunchanged except for the modernized visuals, but others will take more advantage of the possibilities of the Source 2 for more news. The creation tools used to model them will also be offered to modders for them to design their own maps. Another innovation will concern grenade smoke, modeled with volumetric 3D, and therefore responsive to passing players and balls, light and other factors. Finally, THE inputs have been reworked to no longer rely on the tick rate (or discrete time intervals), but over subticks offering an even more responsive rendering.

More than a new episode, CS2 will become the new reference of the series: it will replace Counter-Strike: Global Offensive via a free update coming in Summer 2023. All your progress will not be lost, because you will be able to keep your arsenal, to display with the old models or other more modern ones. The three sequences already present gameplay of this new version.

IT CHANGES EVERYTHING

Smoke Grenades are now dynamic volumetric objects that interact with the environment and react to lighting, shots, and explosions.

  • Gameplay
    • Smoke can now interact with other in-game events. Bullets and explosive grenades can push smoke for a short time to clear line of sight or otherwise reduce visibility.

  • Natural smoke spread
    • Smoke now escapes through open doors and broken windows, runs up and down stairs, spreads through long hallways and mixes with other smoke.

  • Reaction to lighting
    • In Counter-Strike 2, smoke particles interact with the unified lighting system, providing more realistic brightness and colors.

ACTION REACTION

The tickrate no longer affects movement, shooting or throwing grenades.

Counter-Strike 2 has been designed to greatly reduce the time between performing an action and taking it into account. Previously, the server used discrete time intervals (“ticks”) to retrieve game state. Thanks to the update of the architecture allowed by Counter-Strike 2, and the use of “subticks”, the server now knows the exact moment of a move, a shot or a grenade throw.

Therefore, no matter the tickrate, your moves and shots will feel just as responsive, and your grenades will always land the same.

YOUR FAVORITE PLACES IN A NEW LIGHT

Updates and improvements have been made to the maps to make them cleaner, clearer, and generally of better quality.

These maps have been redesigned from the ground up with the new tools and rendering features of Source 2.

These maps use the new lighting from Source 2, which has a physics-based rendering system that makes materials, lights, and reflections more realistic.

These are classic maps with a solid foundation, which can be used to assess what has changed from CS:GO to Counter-Strike 2. Light and readability have been improved, but no other changes have been affixed to them .

Source 2 rendering tools and features will be available to anyone who wants to create maps for the community. They make the task much less arduous, and allow experimentation and iteration. The Source 2 Workshop will also be available as part of the testing phase at a later date.

YOUR EQUIPMENT, MODERNIZED

Bring your entire CS:GO inventory into Counter-Strike 2. Not only will you keep all the items you’ve collected over the years, but they’ll also benefit from Source 2’s improvements to lighting and textures. In addition to support for old models and finishes, all weapons will get new high resolution models, and some finishes will be able to take advantage of these models.

HIGH DEFINITION VISUAL EFFECTS

All visual effects have been reimagined, from the interface to the game itself.

All of the visual effects have been updated in Counter-Strike 2. Using Source 2’s glow and particle effects systems, new looks and behaviors have emerged for water, explosions, fire, smoke, flares, tracers, impact effects and more.


In Counter-Strike 2, the most important visual elements have been redesigned in order to make them more visible. Bullet holes are now clearly discernible from a distance. Also, new directional bloodstains (which fade over time) provide more information on the battlefield.


Explosions, flames, C4 lights… Anything goes! By making use of Source 2’s feature set and the latest technologies, environment effects in Counter-Strike 2 offer greater consistency and fidelity to reality.

  • Interface improvements

The Counter-Strike 2 interface has been completely redesigned and features brand new visuals. These improvements aren’t just cosmetic, they also provide important information about the state of the game.

REALISTIC SOUND EFFECTS

The sounds of Counter-Strike 2 have been renewed to better match the physical environment, be more expressive and convey more information about the in-game situation. They have also been rebalanced for more comfortable listening.

A test phase will begin this month, but you cannot register for the moment: Valve will select candidates from CS:GO devotees, which will have an option to participate in the beta on their home screen. It will initially give access to Deathmatch and unranked competitive games on Dust2, but content will evolve until launch. All the selection methods are explained here.
