Counterpoint – In one year, the average price of smartphones has increased by 10%


Studies follow and look alike, all pointing to one fact: smartphone deliveries are down in 2022 compared to 2021, due to a difficult period combining inflation and a still fragile health context. The Counterpoint firm thus reports, for the third quarter of 2022, a drop in smartphone deliveries of 12% over one year in number of units.

On the value side, the firm estimates that these products represent a decline in income of 3%, settling at around 100 billion dollars. And if the drop in value is more contained, it is thanks to the average sale price of smartphones which, according to Counterpoint, has increased in parallel by 10%, thanks to the vogue for 5G smartphones, but also to market concentration around premium models.

An average price on the rise at Apple, but not only

In detail, Counterpoint notes that Apple is playing a leading role in these trends thanks to its iPhone 14 series, notably driven by its Pro model. He observes that Apple’s turnover has grown by 10% in one year, and that the average selling price of its smartphones has increased by 7% in the third quarter of 2022, dragging the market in their wake. It must be said that the iPhone 13 Pro cost at its launch €1159 in 128 GB, while its successor, with equal storage, is billed €1329…

Samsung, thanks to a much larger catalog, recorded according to the firm an increase in the average price limited to 2% in the third quarter, thanks to the emphasis placed on entry-level products… and on folding terminals, which Counterpoint ensures that deliveries have doubled in one year.

Counterpoint finally mentions the case of Xiaomi, whose turnover for the third quarter of 2022 is up 4%, despite a drop in the number of products delivered. The institute considers that while Xiaomi sold fewer products over $300 (-1.5%), the firm made a “significant slip” smartphones under $200 to the $200-299 range, which explains an average smartphone price of $205, an estimated increase of 14%.
