In the next 30 days, Abdourahamane Tiani wants to hold a “comprehensive national dialogue” and consult all Nigeriens, as the new ruler announced on state television on Saturday evening. A new constitution is to be created on this basis.
The leader of the military junta also stressed that the decisions will be taken “without outside interference”. Tiani wants to set up an interim government that should not be in office for more than three years.
A few hours earlier, Ecowas and Abdourahamane Tiani met for the first time in the Nigerien capital Niamey. This delegation then also paid a visit to President Mohamed Bazoum, who had been detained by the putschists. In addition to the African Union, the EU and the United Nations, Ecowas is also demanding Bazoum’s immediate release.
Ecowas wants a peaceful solution
The West African community of states Ecowas is striving for a peaceful solution. Nevertheless, one is prepared for a military operation if the peaceful solution fails. Ecowas has also set a target date for an assignment, but has not communicated this publicly.
For their part, the coup plotters speak of concrete measures that have been developed for defense. They will work together with Mali and Burkina Faso. The military has also ruled in these two states since coups.
