  • On Tuesday, Federal President Alain Berset and Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis received the Hungarian Prime Minister for a courtesy visit.
  • The initiative for the meeting came from the Hungarian Prime Minister.
  • Orban was in Switzerland for a different reason: On Wednesday he will give a speech in Zurich at the invitation of the magazine “Weltwoche”.

The focus of the exchange was bilateral relations, Switzerland’s European policy goals, the Hungarian presidency of the European Union in the second half of 2024 and current international issues.

The initiative for the meeting with the Swiss government came from Orban. Known as a confidant of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Orban has been criticized internationally, especially since the Russian attack on Ukraine.

Hungary formally supports the sanctions against Russia. But Orban’s meeting with Putin in Beijing a month ago raised additional concerns, which were publicly expressed by US Ambassador to Hungary David Pressman.
