Covid-19: 10-year-old child mistakenly receives half-dose of Moderna vaccine for adults

Coming to get vaccinated against Covid-19, this 10-year-old girl suffered from an organizational error. At the Ponts vaccination center in Avranches (Manche), a half-dose of the Moderna vaccine, intended for adults, was injected. His parents filed a complaint.

When it comes to vaccination of children, the rule is to administer Pfizer’s serum, with one third of the dosage of an adult.

But, on her arrival, the young patient “was asked to sit in the wrong place because there was no room in the right place”.

Asked by France Bleu, the director of the Avranches-Granville hospital, Joanny Allombert, explains that within the center, people are divided into “several vaccination lines”, managed at the same time. Engaged in the wrong, the granddaughter therefore did not receive the dose reserved for her.

No immediate reaction observed

The nurse who vaccinated her “immediately” realized her mistake, according to the hospital director. A doctor intervened with the girl and her parents, advocating increased monitoring of the child. No immediate reaction was observed and, according to Joanny Allombert, the granddaughter “is doing well for the moment”.

To prevent such an error from happening again, the hospital management decided to better distinguish each vaccination course, especially that of children, using barriers. Different colored forms could also be used to facilitate the reception of all patients.
