With the coronavirus crisis, many questions have been hovering lately: are the borders open? Where is the epidemic in this or that country … To answer it, Travel generation, the travel guide that allows you to find all the information to organize your holidays, has designed a COVID-19 confidence index that allows you to follow the evolution of the situation country by country. Updated in real time, this index helps travelers plan their vacations.

The online booking site Kayak.fr, also uploaded an interactive map which lists all the restrictions of countries around the world. At a glance and in real time, we can now know which country it is possible to go to and under what conditions.

Countries open despite the health crisis

To date, 43 countries are open to tourists without any formal restrictions. Monitoring of the situation is still in place, so PCR tests or quarantine on arrival may be imposed.

Open European countries:

  • Albania
  • Bosnia and herzegovina (foreign travelers must have a medical certificate with a negative COVID-19 PCR test result issued within 48 hours before arrival).
  • Kosovo
  • North Macedonia
  • Serbia

African countries open:

  • Tunisia (since April 9, all travelers, regardless of their country of departure, must undergo a PCR test within 72 hours before their departure and present the negative results of the test at the airport upon their arrival in Tunisia).
  • Mauritania (all travelers must show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test performed within 5 days of arrival).
  • Mali (To enter Mali, travelers must present a negative COVID-19 test issued within 7 days before departure and complete an online form. The form is available online at www.anac-mali.org).
  • Guinea-Bissau (all travelers must present a medical certificate with a negative PCR test for coronavirus (COVID-19) issued within 72 hours before departure).
  • Liberia (all travelers must download the Lib Travel mobile app to iOS-Android, and pay for their COVID-19 test before arrival).
  • Ghana (Travelers must present a negative COVID-19 PCR test, issued within 72 hours of departure. They will also be required to take a mandatory COVID-19 test on arrival).
  • Togo (travelers will be tested on arrival).
  • Sudan
  • Gabon (travelers are subjected to the COVID-19 test and self-isolation upon arrival).
  • Uganda (Travelers must present a negative COVID-19 test certificate issued within 120 hours before boarding the plane and are subject to a medical examination).
  • Tanzania
  • Somalia (Travelers to Somalia will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test, passed no more than 96 hours before the start of their trip to Somalia).
  • Namibia (travelers must present a negative COVID-19 PCR test issued within 7 days before departure).
  • Botswana (travelers must present a valid medical certificate with a negative COVID-19 PCR test and are subject to a medical examination on arrival).
  • South Africa (travelers must present a valid medical certificate with a negative COVID-19 PCR test result, must provide proof of accommodation and are subject to a medical examination on arrival).

The open countries of America:

  • Brazil (all travelers must have a valid negative RT-PCR test result and complete a traveler’s health declaration form prior to departure).
  • Mexico
  • El Salvador (All travelers must show a negative COVID-19 PCR test result within 72 hours of departure. Travelers with a negative PCR test result will not be required to quarantine upon arrival).
  • Honduras (travelers must provide a negative PCR test result).
  • Nicaragua (travelers must present airlines with a medical certificate with a negative result for the coronavirus (COVID-19) test, carried out within 72 hours before arrival).
  • Costa Rica
  • Haiti (all travelers must present a medical certificate with a negative COVID-19 PCR test or antigen test result issued within 72 hours before departure).
  • Dominican Republic
  • Porto Rico (travelers must have performed a negative PCR test for COVID-19 within the last 72 hours, completed a travel declaration form and have obtained an exit confirmation number from the airport and a QR code).
  • Panama (Travelers must present a negative COVID-19 PCR-RT test issued within 48 hours before their departure for Panama and complete a declaration).
  • Ecuador (Travelers can enter Ecuador, but must present a negative RT-PCR test and may be subject to additional antigen testing and / or quarantine on arrival).
  • Guyana (travelers must present a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test carried out within 7 days of arrival and complete a passenger locator form online at least 24 hours before arrival).
  • Bolivia (travelers must present a medical certificate with a negative result of the COVID-19 PCR test, issued within 7 days before arrival and certified by a Bolivian consulate).
  • Paraguay (travelers must be in possession of a medical certificate with a negative result of the RT-PCR test for COVID-19 carried out within 72 hours before their arrival and complete a formulation of information on the health of the traveler).

Asian countries open:

In Asia, alone Armenia is totally open to travelers. Upon arrival, travelers will still be required to present a medical certificate with a negative COVID-19 PCR test result issued within 72 hours of arrival (translated into Armenian, Russian or English language) and will be subject to a medical examination. .

Countries completely closed to tourists during the health crisis

To date, 50 countries formally prohibit foreigners from crossing their borders. Only nationals, residents and other travelers in certain special cases can enter the country.

Belgium, Algeria, Libya, Yemen, Oman, Venezuela, Uruguay, French Guiana, Norway, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, the Philippines … are part of the of the 50 countries totally closed for the moment.

Countries partially closed during the crisis

For now, 122 countries, including France and a large majority of Europe, have chosen to partially open their border only to travelers with a compelling reason. The restrictions imposed may depend on the nationality of the travelers, their country of departure or other specific criteria.

On April 17, the government tightened health rules by deciding to strengthen border control measures for tourists from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Guyana. The latter will be forced to self-isolate for a period of ten days.

Which countries will soon open their borders?

In his speeches, the President of the Republic mentioned a possible lifting of restrictions for travelers next May. For the moment, 5 countries have announced a specific reopening date like Greece, but certain entry criteria could still be applied in India, Mongolia or Nepal for example.
