Covid-19: hydrogen to fight the virus? Scientists are looking for volunteers to test: Femme Actuelle The MAG

Tocilizumab, remdesivir, dexamethasone … Many drugs are undergoing clinical trials to test their potential effectiveness against Covid-19. To advance research and find a treatment capable of fighting the coronavirus, doctors and researchers from Grenoble University Hospital have decided to launch a slightly different clinical study, since it is interested in the effects of … hydrogen.

In question ? This molecule has an anti-oxidant effect, which could be effective against severe forms of Covid-19. Another important advantage of hydrogen is that it is safe for the body.

This clinical study, called HydroCovid, thus aims to test the interest of"a water treatment enriched in hydrogen, which reduces the risk of inflammation, and therefore of aggravation", explain the researchers. They need 450 volunteers to take part in their research.

Hydrogen to prevent severe forms of Covid-19?

Are you over 60, do you live in Drôme, Isère, Savoie or Côte-d'Or, do you have symptoms of Covid-19 and have you been tested by sampling? You can take part in this clinical study.

Participants should drink, twice a day for 21 days, 250 ml of water containing either a tablet to enrich the water with hydrogen or a placebo. The tablets will be delivered directly to their homes. They will also have to do two teleconsultations with study doctors and note the evolution of their symptoms and their oxygen saturation every day. Follow-up will then continue at 3 months, 6 months and 12 months.

Scientists hope that the hydrogen will help prevent participants from developing a severe form of the disease. "By its powerful antioxidant role, hydrogen could have a beneficial effect in preventing the runaway inflammatory reactions that lead to complications of Covid-19. This hypothesis is supported by numerous preclinical and theoretical arguments, as well as by Chinese clinical studies ", summarize the researchers.
