Covid-19 in New Aquitaine: incidence rates are soaring, where are we in the region?

While the incidence rate exceeds 3,000 in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques and rises to impressive levels among young people, hospital pressure is very strong in the Dordogne or in the Landes.

Week after week, the records are sadly falling: the incidence rate in New Aquitaine is rising once again to rise to 2,152 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, over the rolling week of January 4 to 10. The indicator had never reached such a level, but remains below the national average at 2,833.

The incidence jumped by 65% in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques

In the region, it is a constant, the situation is very different from one department to another. On the other hand, everywhere, the evolution of the situation seems explosive these last days. Well above the national average, Pyrénées-Atlantiques is posting a record incidence rate this week, which jumped 65% in one week, to 3,026 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Gironde and Landes are above the regional average with respective rates of 2,542 (+37%) and 2,367 (+47%).

Then follow Charente-Maritime (1816, +44%), Dordogne (1707, +35%) and Lot-et-Garonne (1556, +52%). Even Charente, which has an incidence rate of 1483, among the lowest of French departments, suffered an increase of +61% this week.

Stratospheric impacts in young people

The national indices panic even more when we consider the youngest age groups: 4,854 among 20-29 year olds, 4,800 among 10-19 year olds, 3,955 among those under 20 and 3 000 in children under 9 years old.

In 3 to 5 year olds, the incidence rate reaches 3,000 in Landes and 3,600 in Pyrénées-Atlantiques, and is close to the regional average in Charente-Maritime, Dordogne and Gironde.

Among 6-10 year olds, the Pyrénées-Atlantiques are also in the lead with 4,400 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The rate is around 3,000 in Charente-Maritime and Dordogne, and rather 3,500 in Landes and Gironde.

Among college students, the same incidence rate at 4,400 in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. It still comes close to 3,700 in the Landes and 3,800 in Gironde.

And among high school students, the counters become more than scarlet: the rate climbs to 7600, still in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. The moors follow very closely with 7,400 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In Gironde, the rate is 5,000, 4,600 in Dordogne, 4,200 in Charente-Maritime, 4,000 in Lot-et-Garonne, and 3,400 in Charente.

Hospitals in difficulty

Even if the hospital indicators are almost stable, the situation in the establishments of the region is very tense. As of January 10, 253 patients were in critical care, and there were more than 1,300 admissions for Covid in hospitals in New Aquitaine.

Pending a possible improvement, hospital pressure is high, but seems detached from incidence rates: its rate is 126% in Dordogne and 107% in Landes, i.e. patients in resuscitation occupy more beds than are available.

This rate reaches 80% in Charente-Maritime, 75% in Charente, 71% in Pyrénées-Atlantiques, 64% in Lot-et-Garonne and only 53% in Gironde.
