Covid-19: is the number of cases decreasing in your region?

CURVES – For the first time since the arrival of the Omicron variant, the number of contaminations recorded is down from one week to the next in France. In several regions, the peak even seems to have passed.

Is France (finally) reaching the end of the tunnel? After a steady rise in indicators in recent weeks, the country seems to be reaching the peak of the fifth wave. Sunday January 16, for the first time since the arrival of the Omicron variant, the number of positive tests recorded was lower than the previous Sunday. Result: the number of daily cases is also down. But disparities persist between metropolitan areas.

France affected by a fifth wave of Covid-19

These regions where the peak seems to have passed

After weeks of increases, the indicators are trending lower in two regions:Ile-de-France and the Corsica. In the Paris region, the number of cases has multiplied by seven in less than a month. The incidence rate was set at 596 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on December 16, to reach 4,110 on January 6, according to data from Public Health France grouped by CovidTracker. Since then, the number of cases has started to fall again: on January 13, this indicator was at 3727.

Good news that Corsica is also experiencing, where the incidence rate is also decreasing. According to the same source, 2,746 positive tests per 100,000 inhabitants were recorded on January 8 on the Island of Beauty. Five days later, this indicator was only at 2218.

Those regions that reach the peak

Other regions have not yet crossed the peak, but seem close to doing so. This is particularly the case of Great East. For the past week, the incidence rate has fluctuated between 2,200 and 2,300 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Same situation in Normandy, where this indicator has barely increased for about ten days.

However, the shift towards the decline has not yet taken place. And the number of cases, after having slowly decreased, has gone up slightly in recent days.

These regions where the number of cases remains on the rise

Everywhere else, we will still have to wait. Despite a stabilization of contaminations at the beginning of the week of January 10, the number of cases is (slightly) rising again in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, in Burgundy-Franche-Comte, in Brittany, in the Center, the Hauts-de-France, the New Aquitaine, L’Occitania, the Pays de la Loire and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.

But optimism remains strong. “The worst-case scenario is moving away, the decline has begun”, assured this Monday morning on France inter Professor Arnaud Fontanet, member of the Scientific Council. According to him, the peak of contamination should soon be exceeded throughout the country.
