At the end of the Council of Ministers this Wednesday, May 11, Olivier Véran announced the end of the obligation to wear a mask in public transport from Monday, May 16.
After the removal of the obligation to wear a mask indoors, with the exception of public transport and health establishments, since February 28, then the lifting of the vaccination and health pass on March 14, except in nursing homes and hospitals, the government has decided to end one of the last measures put in place to eradicate Covid-19, confirming the improvement of the situation in France.
“The epidemic situation is improving, the pandemic is not over, but the number of new daily diagnoses is decreasing and we consider that it is no longer appropriate to maintain this obligation to wear a mask in public transport, to from Monday, May 16”, declared the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, at the end of the Council of Ministers.
Be careful however, protection is always compulsory “if the health situation requires it” in nursing homes, health establishments (hospitals, clinics, health centers, etc.), but also in the offices of medical professionals, in pharmacies, analysis laboratories or for people visiting elderly or disabled people.
A booster shot next fall
During his speech, the Minister of Health also mentioned the possibility of seeing the emergence of “new variants from Omicron” against which “we can fight with the immunity that we have acquired”.
Nevertheless, a vaccination booster may be necessary “in the fall” if France were to face a new wave.
“We will ask ourselves, perhaps, the question of a vaccination reminder next fall if ever a wave were to emerge. Will it be a reminder of the whole population or a reminder of fragile people only? I do not have the answer to this question because I do not yet know what variant we will face, when and what will be the state of immunity of the population, ”explained Olivier Véran.
