More than 20,000 new cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours in France, while the average incidence rate has exceeded 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants throughout the territory. And the effects of this new wave are beginning to be felt in the hospital.

After several months of calm, France is in turn hit by a fifth wave of the Covid-19 epidemic. This new wave “is there”, confirmed government spokesman Gabriel Attal on Wednesday. For two weeks, the number of contaminations has been increasing very rapidly in the country, around 40 to 50% per week, and on Wednesday, for the second day in a row, Public Health France recorded more than 20,000 new contaminations. Figures that had not been reached in France since August 25.

All the indicators show that the virus is circulating a lot again. The average incidence rate for the whole of France is 106 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. And departments like Ardèche or Haute-Corse exceed 200 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

More than 7,600 people in hospital

Moreover, this strong circulation of the virus is beginning to be felt in the hospital. 7,663 people are currently hospitalized for Covid-19 in France, and a third of them have arrived in hospital in the past seven days.

But it should be remembered that a year ago, at the same time, at the height of the second wave, there were more than 33,000 people hospitalized. Vaccination is therefore playing its role as a dike against this fifth wave for the moment. Vaccination to which must be added more than ever the barrier gestures of wearing a mask in a closed place and ventilation.

According to figures from Public Health France published Tuesday evening, nearly 20,000 new contaminations have been recorded in the last 24 hours, a record since the end of August.
