A new booster vaccination campaign against Covid-19 will be organized from next fall, according to the recommendations of the High Authority of Health issued on February 23, 2023. It will be based on the model of the vaccination campaign against seasonal flu and will also be aimed at the same audience.

Covid vaccine reminder: who will be affected by the vaccination recommendations?

Injecting a second booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine is strongly recommended for vulnerable people, whose immunity declines more quickly than others, in particular:

  • People aged 65 and over;
  • People with comorbidities with a higher risk of a serious form of the disease: complicated high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, obesity, cancers, psychiatric disorders, transplant recipients, etc.
  • Immunocompromised people;
  • Pregnant women ;
  • Residents of accommodation establishments for dependent elderly people (Ehpad) and long-term care units (USLD);
  • People living in close proximity to or in regular contact with immunocompromised, vulnerable or elderly people (relatives, healthcare professionals, etc.)

Is the Covid vaccine compulsory?

The vaccine is recommended but not obligatory, even for people at risk.

The injection of this second booster dose is no longer recommended for people not targeted by the recommendations described above. “However, if a person is not in the target and wishes to receive a reminder, they will be able to benefit from it free of charge.t”, indicates Health Insurance.

As a reminder, the vaccine is 100% covered by Health Insurance for All.

Pfizer, Sanofi, Novavax… With which vaccine?

The booster dose can be carried out with bivalent messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines adapted to the Omicron variant: they are recommended regardless of the type of vaccine previously administered.

  • In those under 30 and in children aged 5 and over: Comirnaty vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech are recommended.
  • From the age of 30, the use of the Spikevax vaccine Moderna is possible, due to the higher risk of myocarditis in patients below this age.

An alternative to bivalent mRNA vaccines is also possible (for those with a contraindication or refusing other available vaccines) with VidPrevtyn Beta vaccines from Sanofi and Nuvaxovid from Novavax.

When will the vaccination campaign start?

According to the HAS, the booster vaccination campaign will begin atfall 2023.

What is the time between the booster and the last dose of Covid-19 vaccine?

The time limit to be respected after the last vaccine injection or the last Covid infection is a minimum of 6 months, regardless of the person’s situation.“, indicates Health Insurance on its site.

In a pharmacy, at the doctor’s or nurse’s office, in a vaccination center… Where to get vaccinated against Covid?

For all vulnerable people targeted by the HAS recommendations, booster vaccination can be carried out:

  • To the drugstore,
  • At the doctor,
  • With a nurse,
  • With a dental surgeon,
  • With a midwife.

For people residing in nursing homes or care facilities, vaccination can be carried out directly on site.
