HSV fails again in the promotion race
Hamburger SV recorded more game shares against Darmstadt 98, but could not convert them into goals. Instead, the extremely dangerous guests meet. In the promotion campaign, HSV is threatened with trouble from their pursuers again.
Hamburger SV suffered another setback in the final sprint for promotion to the Bundesliga. The North Germans were defeated 1: 2 (0: 0) in their home Volksparkstadion against table twelfth Darmstadt 98 and can be overtaken by the pursuers. However, SpVgg Greuther Fürth and Holstein Kiel have to win their catch-up games for this. For the time being, Hamburg remain in second place in the table behind leaders VfL Bochum.
Erich Berko (51st) and striker Serdar Dursun (60th) scored the goals for the strong Hessen team. Jeremy Dudziak scored the next goal (77th).
HSV threatens to deviate from the path of promotion again in the decisive phase. After the sobering draw in the last game against Hannover 96 despite a 3-0 lead, coach Daniel Thioune had asked his team to be more clever. But the defense again failed.
The North Germans recorded more game shares, but could not use them to clear scoring chances. The guests withdrew a long way and waited for counter opportunities. If they came in front of the host’s box, they were extremely dangerous. The counterattack to the first Darmstadt goal was initiated by goalkeeper Marcel Schschuhe with a wide and precise tee shot to Mathias Honsack. Berko had no trouble completing.
The fact that striker Dursun, who was born in Hamburg, scored his 17th goal of the season in a failed defense by Stephan Ambrosius, hurt the hosts twice. The only consolation for HSV: In the remaining six games, with the exception of the game against Karlsruher SC, he only has opponents from the lower half of the table.
