- An Air Zermatt helicopter had an accident on Col Gnifetti in the Monte Rosa massif while landing.
- The helicopter transported glacier researchers.
- All occupants were unharmed.
As reported by Air Zermatt, the helicopter encountered air turbulence during the approach – a so-called vortex – and then hit the ground hard. The rotor blades touched the ground and the helicopter tipped over.
The Valais canton police confirmed the accident to SRF. All occupants were unharmed, a spokesman said. According to Air Zermatt, the helicopter was transporting glacier researchers.
The pilot, the flight assistant and the three workers are doing well. The relief at Air Zermatt is great: “In a helicopter accident there is always luck if nothing bad happens. We are very happy that everyone was able to get up and run away.” The people are already back in the valley.
The Valais canton police want to provide more information in the afternoon. The Swiss Safety Investigation Board (Sust) has started investigations into the cause of the accident.
Air Zermatt helicopter crashed in 2018 in a lake
The last Air Zermatt accident happened in 2018. At that time, a helicopter with a fire bucket crashed into a quarry pond during a test flight, and the pilot was seriously injured.
