Expected on June 21 in our theaters, after a very likely passage by the Cannes Film Festival, “Asteroid City” by Wes Anderson unveils its trailer, with pastel colors, retro science fiction and, as always, a cast XXL.
How do you recognize a Wes Anderson film? With colors that draw towards pastel, with the symmetrical composition of its frames, with its cold humor which often hits the mark. And its castings, always more impressive from one feature film to another.
Expected on June 21 in our theaters, Asteroid City will be no exception and its trailer proves it, even if all the actors and actresses do not appear there.
However, we come across newcomers such as Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Maya Hawke, Matt Dillon, Sophia Lillis or Steve Carell, alongside regulars of the filmmaker’s universe such as Jason Schwartzmann, Tilda Swinton (from the back), Jeffrey Wright, Liev Schreiber or Rupert Friend. Which is already tough in itself.
But the trailer reminds us that we will also have to count on Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Hong Chau (currently starring in The Whale), Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum or even Margot Robbie. Just that. As many people as we could find on the steps of the Cannes Film Festival in May, since Asteroid City is one of the most credible candidates for the selection.
Wes Anderson could then afford a third participation in the Competition, after being selected with The French Dispatch in 2021, and Moonrise Kingdom, which also opened in 2012. It will not be the same with Asteroid City, because the lucky winner must be released at the same time in French cinemas.
But we find a little of the spirit of Moonrise Kingdom in these images, which suggest that the romance between two teenagers will be at the heart of the story. Except that the scout camp will be replaced by a space convention supposed to bring together parents and children in a fictitious city located in the American desert, during the 1950s. And that extraterrestrials will visibly come to upset this neat little world.

Wes Anderson in the text therefore, for this eleventh feature film in which the usual Bill Murray, who has been replaced by Steve Carell, will not appear. But this absence will be compensated by the rest of the cast, absolutely crazy, in this story which seems to be as much.
