One of the most cult franchises in science fiction arrives in France and the rest of the world. Disney+ strikes a major blow by obtaining the broadcast rights to one of the most famous saga of Japanese animation. The war for domination of the anime market against Netflix and Crunchyroll starts again in 2024.
The end of a conflict
Some announcements are likely to make fans of Japanese animated series jump for joy (and rightly so). Those posted online on As the name of said X account reveals, Macross will invade France and the rest of the world in 2024 without further details at the moment.
This is a major victory for this franchise which since its creation in 1982 has never crossed the borders of its domestic market, the Japanese archipelago, under optimal conditions. Indeed, we had to wait until 2021 to see an end to a conflict opposing the rights holders of the Macross license – Harmony Gold, Studio Nue, Big West and the Robotech conglomerate – for several decades. The last actor mentioned is also at the origin of the problem which prevented Macross from being exported under good conditions to the West.
At the beginning of the 80s, Harmony Gold and Carl Macek decide to create a universe from scratch by bringing together three Japanese animated series that have nothing to do from a narrative point of view with each other: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada. Robotech was born, and from this birth the beginning of a nightmare for the distribution and exploitation rights of the saga.
France mourns several absences
In the near future, Super Dimension Fortress Macross will arrive on Disney+ in Japan and other countries around the world via Disney+. According to the press release (see above), 18 programs (films and animated series) labeled “Macross” will be added to the catalog of the SVOD service, particularly on Japanese territory. In France, subscribers will have to make do with only 16 titles. For rights reasons, the original series: The Super Dimension Fortress Macross and the film “Do You Remember Love?” will remain on the sidelines.

The Macross franchise began in 1982 with an original anime produced by Artland and Studio Nue. The animated series Super Dimension Fortress Macross takes as its starting point the crash of an alien ship on Earth. 10 years later, while humanity is repairing the ship and exploiting the technologies discovered on board, extraterrestrials approach the blue planet without declaring their intentions.
