Despite previous hints about a storyline involving Tommy, Druckmann emphasized that the team values creative freedom, leaving fans hopeful yet uncertain about what lies ahead.

The Excitement Builds for The Last of Us Season 2

Mark your calendars for April 14, as Season 2 of The Last of Us will debut on the MAX platform. The anticipation surrounding this new season is palpable. Neil Druckmann, the visionary behind the original video game series, has been deeply involved in the show’s development. In a recent conversation with Variety, he shared insights about the upcoming season’s direction.

Druckmann, alongside showrunner Craig Mazin, has made several notable alterations from the storyline of The Last of Us Part II. He expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I love the changes we made. It’s a different version of the story, but its DNA is there.” This hints at a fresh take on beloved characters and narratives.

Future of The Last of Us Franchise

During the interview, Druckmann addressed the burning question of a potential The Last of Us Part III. He acknowledged the curiosity around a sequel but cautioned fans not to get their hopes up, mentioning, “I expected this question. I guess the only thing I would say is not to bet on a sequel to The Last of Us. It could be the end.” This statement has left fans pondering the future of the franchise.

Interestingly, Druckmann’s remarks seem to contrast with his previous statements made in the documentary Grounded II: The Making of The Last of Us Part II, where he teased a storyline that could follow The Last of Us Part II, focusing on Joel’s brother, Tommy Miller. He noted, “And I mentioned that we wrote a story that takes place after The Last of Us 2 and features Tommy, and I hope that one day we can get to it.”

Despite the swirling rumors in the industry claiming “Naughty Dog presents The Last of Us Part 3,” Druckmann clarified that it was never intended to be a full game. He emphasized that the story was a smaller narrative and shared, “At the time, we had higher priorities at Naughty Dog… I didn’t want to prioritize that story. So that story was put aside. I still believe that one day it will see the light of day. I don’t know if it will be a game or a TV series.”

Druckmann remains optimistic yet cautious about the franchise’s future. He concluded, “If we never manage to start again, if we don’t make another installment, that’s okay, we will have ended on a good note. […] The advantage of working at Naughty Dog is that we are not obliged to make a third game.” He recognizes the fans’ desire for more content but appreciates the creative freedom his team has, stating, “If we are passionate about another idea, they will support us. We are in a very privileged position. And never take that for granted.”

Given the immense success of The Last of Us franchise for Sony PlayStation and its parent studio, it’s difficult to imagine that this beloved series could be shelved for good. The future may hold more adventures in this captivating universe.
