The new “Tatort” team from Bremen takes off on Whit Monday. But is it worth turning on the first crime thriller “Newborn” at all?

On Whit Monday, May 24th at 8:15 pm, the new Bremen “Tatort” team will start its TV service on the first. Policewoman Liv Moormann (Jasna Fritzi Bauer, 32) comes from Bremerhaven, is young, ambitious and wants to go up. The Dane Mads Anderson (Dar Salim, 43) is tough, charismatic and won’t stop at anything. Linda Selb (Luise Wolfram, 33) is technically exact, personally special and has been active in Bremen criminal cases since 2016. How is the new trio doing and is it even worth joining in “Tatort: Neugeboren”?

This is what “Tatort: Newborns” is all about

The Bremen police are on the alert: shortly after the birth, the baby of Sophie Völkers (Morgane Ferru, 30) is kidnapped from the clinic, many officers are involved in the search, the capacities of the police are almost exhausted. Moormann appears at his side, who wants to prove herself on the homicide squad. The BKA investigator Selb is put to the side of the two. They discover knife wounds on the body of the deceased, which make suicide seem unlikely.

During the investigation, Liv Moormann, Mads Andersen and Linda Selb have to get together quickly because they are investigating a swamp of drugs, lies, jealousy and broken dreams.

Is it worth switching on?

Right at the beginning, brutal scenes of violence can be seen in dark pictures – with philosophical thoughts from the off. You will look in vain for funny and shallow scenes, as you are used to in Münster, for example. Clearly at the center of the film is the role of Jasna Fritzi Bauer, who as a young and inexperienced murder investigator has to find her way.

The restless camera work, which is supposed to suggest closeness and authenticity, but in large parts just annoying is noticeable negatively. Otherwise, the creators succeeded in creating a thoroughly solid crime thriller that creates tension, captivates in parts and in any case makes you want more. At least when the cameraman finds a steadier hand and one lets one or the other pseudo-philosophical objection be …
