DECRYPTION – Despite 20 billion euros in revenue more than expected, the 2021 budget deficit has reached a record level.
Nearly two years after the start of the coronavirus crisis, experts at the Ministry of the Economy see more clearly on the expenses incurred in the name of the presidential “whatever it takes” to avoid the collapse of a party economy. The bill is abysmal: more than 140 billion euros in expenditure has been incurred to finance emergency aid for businesses – such as partial unemployment and the solidarity fund – or even vaccines and tests, which are massively used.

“In detail, we have 70 billion in expenditure in 2020, a little over 60 billion in 2021 and around ten billion for 2022”, indicates the Minister of Public Accounts, Olivier Dussopt, in an interview with echoes. And again, the Bercy tenant does not take into account, in its calculations, the loss of tax revenue as well as the recovery plan of 100 billion euros deployed over three years (2020-2022).
