Criticism of “maximum order quantities”: Countries are attacking Spahn because of the Biontech cap

Criticism of “maximum order quantities”
Countries are attacking Spahn because of the Biontech cap

With the restriction of the Biontech deliveries, Spahn has received severe criticism. The health minister has now announced an additional one million vaccine doses from Biontech for the coming week. His colleagues at the national level, however, are calling for further steps.

The health ministers of the federal states reacted with sharp criticism to the planned limitation of the Biontech vaccine by the responsible federal ministry. In view of the current pandemic situation, it is “essential that the vaccinations against Corona, in particular the booster vaccinations, are pushed ahead with the greatest vigor”, according to a joint decision. The “briefly announced introduction of maximum order quantities for Biontech” threatens “to endanger the current positive development of vaccination progress for initial and booster vaccinations”.

Bavaria’s Minister of Health, Klaus Holetschek, said after the consultations at the Conference of Ministers of Health that the problem with Biontech deliveries had to be resolved “promptly”. The debate should not put a brake on the population’s increased willingness to vaccinate.

“Moderna – effective, safe and equally good”

Specifically, the heads of department of the federal states are calling on the executive minister, Jens Spahn, to “provide sufficient vaccine” in order to advance the vaccination campaign. Therefore, the delivery limit must “be lifted as soon as possible”. But not only that: They call on Spahn to “do everything” to “provide the vaccinations immediately and to deliver the existing stocks as quickly as possible”.

Spahn had previously announced that it would provide an additional million doses of the vaccion from Biontech and Pfizer in the coming week. There should be three million doses of the vaccine instead of two million, after six million doses this week.

The state ministers and senators welcome the announcement in their declaration at the end of a joint meeting. At the same time, they emphasize that the “Moderna vaccine is an effective, safe and equally suitable vaccine for all types of vaccination”. Regardless of this, the ministry should try to get more Biontech deliveries from the EU or bring already promised quantities into the country more quickly.

Holetschek also called for a debate in federal politics about a general vaccination requirement. He hopes that “a signal will soon come from Berlin that vaccination is mandatory”. As Bavaria’s health minister said, the state health ministers will probably meet again this week.
