According to the information, the reason for the step is that Wagenknecht “regularly distances himself publicly from the positions and decisions of the Left Party”. The 53-year-old has fallen out with the party leadership around chairmen Janine Wissler and Martin Schirdewan and is considering founding her own party. So far, she has left open whether she wants to found a party herself. The former parliamentary group leader wants to make the decision by the end of the year.
Wagenknecht was back in parliament in the 2021 federal election in first place on the North Rhine-Westphalia state list. At the beginning of the month, the party executive decided to break away from Wagenknecht and asked her to give up her seat in the Bundestag. She refused. “Especially since the board decision on Saturday, many have written to me that they are outraged and voted for the left in the last federal election because of me,” she told the “Spiegel”.
Wagenknecht said she announced months ago that she would not run for the left again.
