Criticism of the Federal President: Melnyk hits a sore point

Dhe allegations and insinuations from the Ukrainian embassy against German politicians, recently particularly vehemently against the Federal President, should not be weighed against the gold scales in view of the war crimes committed against the Ukrainians. But you seem to hit a sore spot.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier feels compelled to explain his Russia policy as foreign minister under Angela Merkel and as head of the chancellery under Gerhard Schröder. Steinmeier portrays the years of his foreign policy work as a time of stubborn but dwindling hopes of somehow being able to cultivate a partnership with Russia. Steinmeier described it as a mistake to have supported the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline when he was already Federal President.

More weighty are allegations by the Ukrainian ambassador Melnyk that Steinmeier had created a “spider web of contacts” with Russia that is still active in the government today. That sounds disrespectful, but in view of the diverse connections that the SPD in Berlin, Hanover and Schwerin cultivated in the Russian power apparatus, it cannot be completely dismissed.

The foreign policy pursued by Steinmeier and the SPD of good faith and the art of repression will have to bear this burden for a while. But the SPD shouldn’t be persuaded that they alone were so unworldly. She was just particularly thorough.
