  • Basel Zoo is celebrating a rare breeding success for the kokodiltegu lizard.
  • Six hatchlings hatched last summer, five of which survived. Two of them can now be seen in the display enclosure in the zoo’s vivarium.
  • With this breeding success, Basel Zoo is one of the few European zoos that has so far been able to look forward to offspring among the South American tegu crocodiles, as the Basel Zoo announced on Tuesday.

The adult Basel animals come from the Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna and came to Basel in 2020. The Vienna Zoo was now also very helpful with advice on the tricky handling of the breeding season, said the responsible curator of the Basel customs.

So the eggs first had to be saved from the parents’ appetites, then carefully nurtured in warm temperatures in the incubator over the incubation period of 140 to 150 days.

The crocodile tegu are native to South America. They got their name, which is reminiscent of the larger lizards, because of their tail, which is flattened at the sides like the crocodiles and has comb-like scales.
