It was a hot final phase that the audience saw in the women’s mountain bike cross-country race in Lake Placid. Four riders, including the Swiss Sina Frei, who won the short track the day before, fought for victory on the last lap.
Shortly before the home straight, it was Laura Stigger who pedaled powerfully and launched a final attack. Only the Swiss could follow this. In the sprint, Frei was no longer able to overtake the Austrian.
The 27-year-old from Zurich crossed the finish line in second place – and celebrated another first. 24 hours after her first victory in short track, Frei reached the World Cup podium in Olympic cross country for the first time in her career.
Keller before overall World Cup victory
In addition to Frei, three other Swiss women, Nicole Koller (8th), Alessandra Keller (9th) and Steffi Häberlin (10th), were ranked in the top 10. This is the second overall World Cup victory in three years for the 28-year-old Keller before the season finale next weekend in Mont-Sainte-Anne, Canada, will only be a formality.
