Bitter news for Germany opponents and title favorites Spain: Alexia Putellas will miss the European Women’s Championship in England. The day before the start of the tournament, the world footballer’s left cruciate ligament ruptured.
Big shock for Germany’s EM group opponent Spain: World footballer Alexia Putellas has suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in her left knee and has to pause for a long time. The European Women’s Championship in England begins tomorrow, Wednesday – but what is currently probably the best footballer in the world will not be there.
According to “Kicker”, the Spanish association reported in the afternoon that Putellas had sprained his left knee during training. A deployment at the EM is questionable, a few hours later it was finally clear: The midfielder from FC Barcelona will not miss the entire EM, but much more: Putellas has torn the left cruciate ligament, the world footballer is expected to be absent for six months.
Spain is the second German opponent on July 12 in Brentford (9 p.m.) – the DFB team will meet Denmark, second in the European Championship, at the start. The first opponent for the Spaniards is on Friday (6 p.m.) in Milton Keynes outsiders Finland.
It will be the first cap without Putellas in a long time, as she has not missed a recent 33 caps since May 2019. She is the central figure in the Spanish team. In January of this year, she was named World Player of the Year 2021 after winning the Champions League, league and cup treble with Barca. Also this year she won the championship with the club from Catalonia. Olympique Lyon had prevailed in the Champions League final, but with eleven goals they were the top scorer of the premier class season.
