Cruises: MSC lures employees from nursing and health departments onto ships

In view of the wave of Omikron infections, there are growing concerns that the critical infrastructure will be overloaded due to quarantine measures. The shipping company MSC wants to lure employees of these industries with special discounts on cruise ships now. About an action that is well-intentioned but badly timed.

While the quarantine regulations are being relaxed in Germany in order to maintain the critical infrastructure in a possible Omikron wave, the MSC shipping company surprises with an offer of employees from precisely this sector.

With the “Corona Heroes” campaign, the shipping company wants to pay tribute to the work of people in nursing, medical practices, fire brigades and health authorities and is granting a 50 percent discount on all departures up to this year’s summer season.

MSC offers hospital staff special discounts on cruises

“They worked a lot of overtime and risked their lives to save other lives,” said the campaign’s website. The company did not want to say how high the booking numbers are. Compared to the “Spiegel”, however, it was said that there was “very good” demand for the offer due to its attractiveness.

Most recently, massive corona outbreaks on cruise ships made negative headlines. Crew members or passengers are repeatedly tested positive for Corona, although strict PCR controls are now carried out on most ships before the start of the voyage. Several corona cases on cruises around the New Year meant that around 5000 passengers had to make their way home. Eight vacationers and 60 crew members had tested positive.

The Federal Foreign Office has issued an urgent warning against cruises

That too Foreign Office warns before the popular cruises: “Participation in cruises is not recommended. In the event of a COVID-19 outbreak on board – even among vaccinated travelers – the competent authorities abroad will impose a ship quarantine for several days.” Excluded from the warning are river cruises and tours that start in Germany and end again in a German port without a stopover.

The offer, which was created in September 2020, is still valid until the end of the summer season 2022. Hopefully, carefree cruises will be possible again by then. Those working in the critical infrastructure have really earned the recovery.
