CS:GO: m0NESY case, fine line between bug exploit and cheat

On CS:GO, it’s better not to be taken in dislike by the Brazilian community and it’s not Thorin who will tell you the opposite! The latter is as committed as she is passionate and does not hesitate to defend her foals body and soul. This weekend, the very young sniper Ilya “m0NESYOsipov found out the hard way. The G2 Esports player was indeed taken to task after using a very questionable smoke during the tournament, especially against Imperialthe team of Fallen. The Brazilians shouted at the cheated by demanding the exclusion of the Russian player… For their part, the player’s defenders pointed out that it was only a bug exploit intended by the game and in fact authorized. Who’s right in this story too complex than sensitive ?

Why do some people call it cheating?

The mechanics used are very visual and you don’t need to be a genius to figure out why it’s problematic. The “smokes” on CS:GO are very important elements of the game, both in attack and in defense. They allow you to block the vision of enemies in order to progress out of sight, which is very practical for taking control of your game. There is no in-game “fan” and apart from waiting for the dissipation of the smoke, there is nothing to do… Except that the Russian player has to find a way to partially cancel the smoke of his opponents by throwing a smoke belonging to him at a specific place on the map. Theoretically, this is impossible since a smoke cannot cancel another smoke, the smoke is on the contrary rather supposed to accumulate! Which makes the An even more problematic situation is that this bug offers a “one way“. m0NESY clearly sees his opponents while the latter only see smoke! The advantage is therefore enormous and while the enemies progress slowly but surely, so as not to make noise, believing themselves to be safe from prying eyes, they above all offer free kills to the Russian prodigy.

Unable to plead for the accident. This bug would actually be known and used by some (including m0NESY’s teammate, Nico) for some time. The young snipper mainly used this same smoke several times during the tournament (once against Navi, 3 times against Imperial). He therefore knowingly did so in order to benefit from this advantage. When we add that in the rules it is specified that we have not allowed to use mechanics that are not provided by the gameif we apply the rules to the letter, we understand why the Brazilians talk about cheated. In the mechanics of the game, a smoke cannot be canceled, whether by a grenade, a molotov or another smoke! But the Russian does not lack arguments to defend himself… and they are understandable.

Is authorized cheating really cheating?

First, it should be noted that for some, from the moment the game allows something, it is authorized. The code is the same for everyone and the most extremists will even go so far as to say that this bug exploit is a question of knowledge and research, just like knowing its broken lines and the line-up for utilities. The reasoning is simplistic, but it deserves mention. It should be noted, however, that not all teams and players were aware of this bug exploit.

Secondly, we learned that the Major’s referees had authorized m0NESY and G2 to use this smoke very particular. Difficult to know if the referees in question were aware of all the ins and outs of this one, but G2 proved in black and white that the team had been given the green light before the competition began… Impossible in this context to sanction the player. Note also that even after the controversy, PGL persisted in announcing that the bug was still exploitable according to its rules! At the same time, saying otherwise, his image would have taken a hit and the tournament should have punish the player in addition to doing potentially replay matches.

The players association: the voice of reason

Despite this authorization, which seems a bit hypocritical, is out of place, let’s put it this way, we will never see this controversial smoke again, neither in the tournament nor in the game. the community is currently looking to reproduce the bug on all the maps everywhere… And that some have found new spots to exploit!

  • In the Major : The Counter-Strike Professional Players’ Association (CSPPA) has urgently brought together the 16 teams still in contention in the competition. They all agreed to no longer use this smoke bug, including G2.
  • In the game in general : Valve listened to its community and urgently patched CS:GO to fix this bug which can no longer be exploited.

For those wondering why Valve’s patch wasn’t enough to fix everything, be aware that the Major is not played on the live server.

esport-csgo

Team Vitality is highly anticipated at the CS:GO Major. The structure is in the hard on a lot of games and a good performance on Valve’s FPS would put out the fire. For the moment, it’s off to a good start with a huge record for ZywOo from the first game!
