Cillian Murphy will return in the zombie film “28 Years Later” in a “surprising” way according to producer Tom Rothman.
After years of waiting, filming on 28 Years Later – the first part of a new trilogy written by original screenwriter Alex Garland – has finally begun. However, the presence in the casting of Cillian Murphy, star of the 2002 film, 28 Days Later, remained to be confirmed.
At the beginning of May, insider Jeff Sneider explained that the interpreter of Jim in Danny Boyle’s film will not return in 28 Years Later in order to make way for the other characters played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes. According to him, Cillian Murphy will make a cameo in Nia DaCosta’s film and will be at the center of the third opus. We will therefore have to wait a few years before seeing Cillian Murphy again trying to escape the contaminated.

But yesterday, during the presentation of Gilda by Charles Vidor at Cannes Classics, Sony Pictures producer Tom Rothman declared at the microphone of Deadline that Cillian Murphy will be in the casting of Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later.
The producer talks about Danny Boyle’s film: “I have made eight films with Danny Boyle and I place him in the Pantheon of my filmmakers with his new trilogy 28 Days. It’s 28 years later, but it’s by no means a literal sequel. The casting is excellent, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jodie Comer…”

Relaunched on the presence in the casting of the Irish actor who recently won an Oscar for his role in Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan, the producer adds:
“He will be there, but in a surprising way that develops over the course of the films. Danny is at his best. It’s a very commercial kind of film. When a renowned director directs a commercial film with your own style, it elevates the project.”

Although we still do not know how Cillian Murphy will be present in the film, the interpreter of Jim should therefore be back in 28 years later. Which seems logical since Alex Garland changed his “28 Months Later” to “28 Years” so that the story would be believable.
Currently filming in the county of Northumberland in the north of England, the feature film is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 18, 2025.
