Action film expert David Leitch (John Wick, Atomic Blonde, Bullet Train) is making waves again in 2024 with an ode to action and risk-taking. Surrounded by a dream cast, the man who was Brad Pitt’s official stuntman takes on an iconic series from the 80s. Indeed, The Fall Guy the film is an adaptation of the television show known in France under the name of “The man who falls at peak”.
In development for several years, this action comedy full of stunts and humor, which promises an explosive and entertaining spectacle, marks the return of David Leitch to theaters. He can also count on Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (tipped to become the next James Bond) to attract the general public and bring to life characters who are essentially “over the top”. A little anecdote to shine at social dinners, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Nicolas Cage were associated with the project for a time before withdrawing.
The synopsis of The Fall Guy: Colt Seavers, a talented stuntman and hothead, finds himself involved in a dangerous affair after accepting a seemingly innocuous mission. An explosive romance between two sacred monsters of the 7th Art
Many film fans do not fully appreciate the talent of David Leitch. For my part, I have a deep affection for his cinema which focuses on quality entertainment and inventive action. Certainly, “Deadpool 2” (which is a commissioned product, it is always worth remembering) left me with a bitter aftertaste, but it is the only film by the American director which has left me at all little disappointed. I had an excellent time aboard the “Bullet Train” in 2022 and what can I say, if not bow, to the pulp epic “Atomic Blonde” which captivated me in 2017.
I will be careful not to judge the “adaptation” dimension of the feature film as I know so little about the “The Man Who Falls at the Right Time” series. It must be said that I was only a few months old when the final episode aired on the ABC television network. However, I feel a sincere love of “The Fall Guy” version 2024 for the source material. David Leitch was a stuntman, then a stunt coordinator before moving behind the camera with only one idea in mind: to do justice to the men and women who put themselves in danger to print ever more impressive sequences on film.
“The Fall Guy” is definitely the homage promised by the filmmaker to this profession which is the victim of snobbery by the Hollywood intelligentsia. There is no Oscar for Best Stunt Actor and Best Action Scene, which seems to me to be heresy in this age of supercharged blockbusters. David Leitch and his friend Chad Stahelski (the John Wick saga) have dusted off action cinema in the West, elevated it to the rank of Art, and they each succeed in their own way. In 2024, the man who was Brad Pitt’s understudy directs a “meta” film with the sole reason of being “the stunt” in all its splendor.
This film is an ode to cinematographic craftsmanship and to those talents who give body and soul with the sole aim of bringing to life the vision of a director portrayed by a tender and vengeful Emily Blunt. Even if it means talking about the performances of the actors, it is impossible for me to ignore Ryan Gosling who literally explodes the screen and histrionics just enough to make his fictional alter ego touching with his clumsiness and his desire to do well. Their romance cements a simple and effective storyline as the alchemy that emanates from this cinematic couple is obvious. “The Fall Guy” is definitely an “explosive” romantic comedy.
But let’s get back to the basics… the crumpled sheet metal, the motorized barrels at 150km/h, the punchy fights and the controlled explosions. On this point, “The Fall Guy” delivers on all of its promises and more. He manages to integrate fictitious filming and all the machinery involved into his action sequences in order to highlight the exquisite work carried out by these artists who are too often relegated to the background. The stunt, the stuntmen and stuntwomen… that’s the reason for this film praised by Steven Spielberg himself. At the same time, the latter is fond of talking about cinema. The circle is complete.
“The Fall Guy” is everything I expected from an action film centered around cinema’s shadowy superheroes, and so much more. I laughed. I stamped my feet. In short, I had a hell of a time. This is “my essential”!
