The French 7th Art has found a most generous patron to finance its projects, and it is not the subscribers who will complain. After exploring action cinema with the Balle Perdue saga then AKA, the SVOD service explores another genre… that of the monster film. After Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, the shark hunt begins again on Netflix. Paris is in great danger.

The trailer above features the film Meg 2: The Trench starring Jason Statham.

The love affair between Netflix and French cinema is recent. After a tumultuous start to the relationship, to say the least, the two partners seem to have found common ground. The streaming platform is now investing massively in French production intended for cinemas and/or its catalog. This allowed the North American SVOD giant to reduce the release window for films after theatrical release by several months and even get ahead of the competition. Netflix must wait 15 months, compared to 17 for Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+ and Paramount. In 2024, this collaboration between Netflix and French cinema will produce a genre film… a shark film to be precise.

The teeth of the Seine

Netflix has entrusted its next horror film to a specialist in genre cinema who has worked both in France and in Hollywood on all types of projects. Xavier Gens is known to gamers for his perfect film adaptation of the adventures of the most famous video game assassin: Hitman (2007) with Timothy Olyphant (Deadwood, Die Hard 4: Return to Hell) and Olga Kurylenko (Max Payne) in the main roles. Nevertheless, the self-taught filmmaker has proven his know-how on several episodes of the series Lupine and Gangs of London as well as on the films Farang (2023), Budapest (2018) and of course Frontières (2007).

This new Netflix Original is a thriller that takes up a concept that launched the career of a certain Steven Spielberg almost forty years ago. After that of the film Jaws (1975), another bellicose shark comes to terrorize the Parisian waters in 2024 in Sous la Seine directed and scripted by Xavier Gens. In front of the camera he finds Nassim Lyes with whom he knocked out French cinema in Farang, but also Bérénice Bejo and Léa Léviant. Here is the official synopsis of Sous la Seine:

Summer 2024, Paris will host the triathlon world championships on the Seine for the first time. Sophia, a brilliant scientist, is alerted by Mika, a young activist devoted to ecology, of the presence of a large shark in the depths of the river. They have no choice but to team up with Adil, commander of the river police to avoid a bloodbath in the heart of the city. – Netflix France

The cast of the film Under the Seine:

  • Bérénice Bejo – Sophia
  • Nassim Lyes – Adil
  • Léa Léviant – Mika
  • Timi-Joy Marbot – Raphaël

Sous la Seine will be released exclusively on Netflix in the summer of 2024, which should delight Paris town hall in the middle of the Olympic Games.
