Hayao Miyazaki, master of Japanese animation, once again surprises his fans following the announcement of a new film. While he had already mentioned his wish to retire after “The Boy and the Heron”, it seems that his retirement has been postponed again!

The legendary Hayao Miyazaki, known for his animated masterpieces, always knew how to surprise his audience. Indeed, although “The Boy and the Heron” was announced as his last film, it seems that the master of Japanese animation is still not ready to retire. In September 2023, Studio Ghibli public relations manager Junichi Nishioka revealed that Miyazaki was already working on new ideas. This claim seems to be confirmed once again with more details shared by the director’s son.

A new nostalgic adventure

Goro Miyazaki, the director’s son, recently shared some details about his father’s next project during an interview with Oricon in Japan. Goro, who took over promotion after “The Boy and the Heron”‘s historic Oscar win, described the upcoming film as a “nostalgic” adventure.

“I don’t know if it will actually be for his next film, but it seems like an action-adventure type film, nostalgic and reminiscent of the good old days” – explained Goro Miyazaki

When the latter mentions a “nostalgic adventure”, fans can’t help but speculate about what that could mean. First of all, some think that the next film would revisit universes explored in his previous works. For example, it could be a spiritual sequel to classics such as “My Neighbor Totoro” or “Howl’s Moving Castle”, where viewers would reunite with beloved characters in new adventures, while discovering new aspects of these enchanted worlds. Others think it would refer to the director’s life and adventures from his youth.

A well-kept mystery

Although concrete details on Hayao Miyazaki’s next film are still scarce, one thing is certain: the master is not resting on his laurels. After devoting seven years to the production of “The Boy and the Heron”, he was perfectly rewarded! The title was very well received upon its release, winning the Oscar for best animated film and more recently offering the honorary Palme d’Or to its studio. This film outperformed strong competitors such as “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.” This victory not only solidified Miyazaki’s position as a master of animation, but also highlighted the quality of his work. For fans, this success reassures and reinforces the expectation around his next project. However, we will surely have to wait a long time to see Studio Ghibli in action again!
