The globally recognized anime One Piece has been debated on the internet for some time. Despite the animation living up to expectations, it seems that another aspect is leaving the networks confused. The situation is gaining momentum as the animators communicate about it.

As of 2024, “One Piece” is one of the best-selling manga of all time. Eiichiro Oda’s iconic pirate tale has become a pillar of popular culture since its debut in 1997. Debuting in 1999, the eponymous anime adaptation was a real success. Even today, “Toei Animation” is the production studio behind this Japanese classic. Despite animation that lives up to the title, the sound effects seem to leave something to be desired. So, when the hosts complain about it in turn, the subject is no longer to be taken lightly…

In the world of animation, the bell is ringing!

While it is very rare in the animation world to see professionals express themselves about their own work, Sota Shigetsu is taking the plunge! Recently, the host published a post on X in which he openly criticizes the sound effects of the series. While One Piece’s animation has improved considerably over the years, the sound has not. Since 2019 (start of the Wano arc), Toei Animation has decided to implement the sounds of its other flagship anime “Dragon Ball”. Unfortunately, no explanation justifies this choice of the studio. For Sota Shigetsu, this is a point that needs to be changed as quickly as possible, because “a good video cannot be enjoyed with such sound quality.” The work of the animators to make “One Piece “the most beautiful anime” is clearly impacted by the “mediocre” Sound FX.

The sound in One Piece is terribly bad, so I hope something is done sooner rather than later… This episode was really sad because of the difference between the overwhelming animation and the very bad sound.

Between novelty and nostalgia, One Piece divides

Fans have shared mixed opinions about the sound quality of the show for several years now. For some, it is not normal that the best-selling manga of all time can have noises that are so “strange and disturbing”. Users rely on the fact that SFX have been used since the start of its broadcast in 1999! On X, a trend emerges, “Toei Animation” wants to play the nostalgia card. An idea that could be added with the use of sound effects from “Dragon Ball”. Others imagine a more logical reason for the production studio: money. By using 30-year-old effects, they are sure to be able to save on the budget. However, as usual, fans were quick to repeat the last cult scenes from the anime in order to add a sound effect worthy of its fame.
