The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to experience disappointments at the box office and it is not its distant weaving “cousin” that could save it from an increasingly worrying situation. Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is getting the worst reviews with its latest films. The press is going all out on Madame Web and this is not the first SSU project to arouse indignation.
Morbius on TF1+
The TF1 group broadcast the highly criticized Morbius on the TMC channel before making it available free of charge on TF1+ for a limited time. The adventure of doctor and vampire Michael Morbius played on screen by Jared Leto (Requiem for a Dream, Lord of War) can be viewed on TF1’s SVOD service until March 26, 2024 (posted on March 18, 2024). It will then be permanently removed from the catalog pending its potential return on TF1, TMC, TFX, etc.

A Spider-Man universe adrift
Morbius is the third iteration of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. She continues the work started by Tom Hardy in 2018 with Venom then in 2021 with Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Although SSU never really delighted the critics, the first Venom still raked in US$856.1 million at the box office, but only the curiosity of spectators who are fans of the character explains such success. The second film recorded more than 500 million, which remains a good performance even if Sony probably expected better from its symbiote with golden eggs.
It’s then a cold shower for this alternative universe, despite an officially established link with the MCU. Morbius struggles to exceed $165 million while Madame Web barely repays its production costs. However, Sony still has two cartridges left in 2024 to hit the mark and restore the image of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe in danger. Kraven The Hunter with Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Russell Crow begins its hunt at the end of August in theaters before giving way to Venom: The Last Dance at the end of October. Tom Hardy reprises the role of journalist and host of an extraterrestrial entity Eddie Brock.
