Culture news “On hold” The next Star Wars film with Rey is not about to see the light of day: it is possible that it will simply be canceled!
Announced some time ago, the new Star Wars film with Rey Skywalker has reportedly been put on hold by Disney.
An uncertain project
In 2023, Disney announced the start of three new Star Wars feature films planned between 2026 and 2027. Among these films, we then found The New Jedi Order, a direct sequel to the last trilogy which should therefore feature Rey Skywalker at the head of this new Jedi order.
Except that Disney’s plans have changed in the meantime. According to World of Real And Daniel Richtmanntwo sources always well informed, the project would have been suspended by the firm with big ears. Thus, while filming should have started during the month, it would have been postponed until next year. Blame it on disagreements over the final script.

Nipped in the bud?
Still according to these two sources, the problem mainly comes from the script, still being written. Designed by Steven Knight, the creator of the Peaky Blinders series, the script for this film has not yet managed to convince Kathleen Kennedy, who has headed Lucasfilm since its takeover by Disney. The president of the studio would thus send the notes to the author “to improve the story“.
Steven Knight is not the first screenwriter hired to write this project. Before him, Damon Lindelof and Justin Brit-Gibson also worked on the film before resigning for “artistic differences”.
According to World of Reel, the problem also comes from the nature of the project itself. After suffering several failures, Disney might be less inclined to give Rey a new film. For the production of The New Jedi Order, the firm hired Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy who then insisted that a female character embody the future of Star Wars. Nothing is less certain for the universe created by George Lucas.
