David Leitch makes a sensational return to cinema with his latest action film, “The Fall Guy”, promising a big dose of adrenaline for fans of the genre.
The older among you will probably think of “The Fall Guy”. Indeed, after “Bullet Train” and “Fast and Furious”, David Leitch’s new film draws its origins from the eponymous series from the 80s. During several interviews, the director insists on his commitment to this project: “I put all my heart into it, it’s a tribute to my career.” Although accustomed to action films, this one represents a different challenge, highlighting his former profession, that of a stuntman. In France, the film will be released in theaters on March 1, 2024.
“The Fall Guy”, from stuntman to hero!
The story of “The Fall Guy” features Colt Seavers, played by Ryan Gosling, a former stuntman who finds himself in a phase of his life where everything seems to be going adrift. While he is filming in the film of his former girlfriend Jody Moreno, played by Emily Blunt, everything accelerates! The star voiced by Colt disappears mysteriously, jeopardizing the project. The stuntman becomes the hero of the story when he finds himself engaged in a race against time to save Jody’s first feature film. “The Fall Guy” was originally an action film sprinkled with comedy. But the project evolved, gradually adding a plot focusing on the intimate relationship maintained by the characters.
What does the press think?
The press is almost unanimously behind this new film by David Leitch. According to critics, “The Fall Guy” is designed to share with the audience everything the stunt doubles do: fight, crash, jump, fall, set on fire… Variety even adds that “while it seems overstuffed , it’s because the director (…) showcases everything this profession is capable of.” However, this is not a point appreciated by everyone as Rachel’s Reviews shows: “Rather than a real film, we have the impression that it is a compilation of stuntmen (…) on YouTube.”. Besides its abundance of action, it is considered by most to be one of the biggest “blockbusters” of recent years. A success hailed by Next Best Picture, emphasizing the performance of Ryan Gosling and his ability to adapt regardless of the genre in which the film falls. A point of view shared by Steven Spielberg himself who says he “loved” The Fall Guy.
