Culture news The next arc of Dragon Ball Super can be a grand finale capable of eclipsing all the flaws of the series

At the work where his lines are written, Shueisha has just published the drafts of chapter 102 of Dragon Ball Super. As indicated by his name, the latter features a fight between Son Goku and Son Gohan, a first in manga history, so that the father can test the son’s new strength who has reached a new level of power thanks to his Beast form. Beyond the expected epic duel, this training is the perfect opportunity to find out if Gohan can be a strong ally in the face of the threat currently weighing on the world of Dragon Ball: Black Frieza. And this starting point could well give us one of the best stories told by Dragon Ball Super.

An all-star arc for an epic ending

Imagine that everything that Dragon Ball Super has told us so far culminates in a final arc that puts the emphasis on the fights and the stakes. First of all, we can notice that with the events of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, most of our heroes have new transformations that make them able to face future threats. If Son Goku and Vegeta already had Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego respectively, Gohan has just reached his Beast form while Piccolo becomes Orange Piccolo. Beyond that, the Z-Fighters have since recruited a major ally in the person of Broly who trains with the other Saiyans on Beerus’ planet. Thus, put end to end, this gives us a team of pretty exceptional fighters that we would like to see in action against a group of equally exceptional antagonists.

As we observed at the end of the Granola arc, Black Frieza promises to be a major danger for our heroes. While they are in Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego, the tyrant manages to defeat them both with a single punch, a testament to his incredible power. Thus, Frieza reminds how he is a threat to be taken seriously, much more than in Fukkatsu no F. Instead of seeing all these fighters face this antagonist at the same time, one could imagine that Frieza had in the meantime recruited new soldiers and an army whose lieutenants would make ideal enemies for the Z-Fighters. In this way, each hero could shine with a fight of their own, facing a single opponent, which is a bit unique in Dragon Ball. Obviously, Frieza would be the preserve of Goku and Vegeta, but we could still be treated to other epic clashes.

A new structure to bring a little freshness to DBS

Beyond the epic side of this arc, this structure with multiple antagonists to fight all the heroes is quite common for a Shonen type manga, but ultimately quite unique in Dragon Ball if we omit the tournaments. Most of the time, Akira Toriyama’s work features a main enemy against whom everyone will fight until they succeed in defeating him. In reality, we must instead turn to films so that everyone has their moment of glory. This is the case for example with Space Mercenaries where we remember the memorable fight between Trunks and Gokua. This could inspire the official manga to give rise to equally striking sequences.

In any case, in terms of temporality, this upcoming arc about which little is known could be one of the last in Dragon Ball Super. It must be said that the end of the original manga is closer than ever and that there is not much room for maneuver left… unless it is rewritten. But before getting there, this last story has all the cards in hand to offer an epic ending, featuring all the characters and transformations brought by Super, in a final fight against one of the most popular antagonists of the franchise: Frieza. All we have to do now is wait for the full release of chapter 102 to see where the plot will take us.
