Lately, Netflix has teased quite a few upcoming series and films, including some adaptations highly anticipated by video game fans, such as the animated series Tomb Raider. But another adaptation is coming to Netflix very soon, and it has nothing to do with Lara Croft, but everything to do with a character played by Arnold Schwarzenegger almost 40 years ago…

The license that propelled James Cameron’s career

Almost 40 years ago, James Cameron (Avatar) And Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead) spawned a film that later became a franchise that generated over 2 billion dollars in revenueand this despite the preconceptions of Orion Pictures who was afraid of making a mistake. This film is Terminatora feature-length action and science fiction film that not only allowed James Cameron to turn towards even more ambitious projects, but which also allowed Arnold Schwarzenegger to establish himself as a leading actor by playing T-800the main antagonist of the film.

Since then, the film has received no less than 5 movie sequels, which are certainly not all equal, but which were still able to convince fans of the franchise. The latest, Terminator: Dark Fate (for which you can find the trailer at the head of this article), goes back to the year 2019, and brings back the actors of the original film after the 2015 reboot, Terminator Genisys. In the meantime, the license also tried its luck with a series, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, some web series, novels, comicbooks, and even video games. But the frankness of James Cameron has not said its last word, and it will soon return in a rather unexpected form…

Terminator will return… in 2D

Indeed, it is in the form of an animated series that the universe of Terminator will make its return, this time on Netflix. In development since 2021, Terminator Zero will join the catalog of the SVOD giant on August 29, 2024with Mattson Tomlin (Mother/Android) the controls. Animated by animation studios GI production And Skydance Television under the direction of Masashi Kudo (Bleach), the series leaves the United States for Japan, where an individual called Malcolm Lee is trying to develop new artificial intelligence to compete with SkyNet in 1997. While the events of Last judgement are approaching, SkyNet send a Terminator to eliminate Lee and his children, as you can see in the images below (from 0:36 to 0:40):

As Sarah Connor in the original film, Malcolm Lee will be protected by a mysterious soldier from the future, this time from the year 2022. In this animated series, the famous Terminator will be doubled by Timothy Olyphant (Deadwood), and the license will be used in its entirety. According to Mattson Tomlin, all films are considered canon in the series’ universe, including the reboot and the third installment. For now, we’ll have to make do with the few images shown in the video above, but this new iteration looks like it has potential!
