If there is one director who has stood out in recent years, it is probably Ari Aster: in just three feature films, the American has become one of the most popular filmmakers… to the point of to secure the biggest stars in Hollywood for his next film.
When horror is a science
To say that Ari Aster loves horror is an understatement :en 2018, the director amazed everyone with the terrible Hereditary (in the good sense of the word), an experience from which we do not emerge unscathed and of which you may have seen images passing by. It’s simple, it is perhaps one of the most impactful films in its genre of the last decade, proving the somewhat macabre genius of its author.
And again, it was without counting on Midsommar, a 2019 horror film whose merit is in setting its context in the middle of the day: sect, drugs, psychological delirium and to-die-for acting also provide a most deliciously disturbing cocktail, although not one that should be put before everyone’s eyes.
In 2023, Ari Aster returned with Beau is Afraid, which changed the situation a little since it was a “horror comedy”: with its original concept and the presence of Joaquin Phoenix on the bill, the feature film is clearly unique in its kind. Necessarily, there is reason to look forward to Erington, the director’s next film.
A five-star casting for Erington
Erington, such is the name of Ari Aster’s next project which should reconnect with unhealthy atmospheres: we will follow the adventures of a couple who, while trying to reach Los Angeles in the middle of a pandemic, finds himself stranded around the sinister town of Erington. A sort of wild west that we are told is poignant and which arouses curiosity.
It must be said that the casting does not skimp on resources with the return of Joaquin Phoenix (who won the Oscar for Best Actor for the film Joker, as we recall) in the title role alongside Emma Stone, who has just won herself the Oscar for Best Actress in Poor Creatures. Just that ! Pedro Pascalstar of The Mandalorian and the series The Last of Us, will also be present as will Austin Butler, the big bad from Dune, Part Two. Yes, it does.
Erington doesn’t have a specific release date yet, but it should be released in 2025 if all goes well.
