Many horror movie fans are waiting the release of the Nosferatu remake, 100 years later. We now know the exact day of its release in cinemas!

A gothic horror film inspired by a 1922 classic

Nosferatu is the third version of the film centered on the famous Carpathian vampireafter the previous films dating from 1922 and 1979. It will be led by Robert Eggers, a renowned director for original films like The Northman, The Witch and The Lighthouse. After exploring various genres, Eggers returns to his roots with a gothic horror film. Expectations are high, especially since the director promises to immerse viewers in a visually impressive horror atmosphere. At Empire, the director declares:

Yes, it’s a scary film, a horror film. A gothic horror film.

Unlike previous versions, centered on Count Orlok, the vampire who lives in his castle in Transylvania, this film will above all tell the story of Ellen Hutter, the wife of real estate agent Thomas Hutter who visits the count’s castle. It’s a new vision of history, even if Ellen already had a very important role in previous versionssince she was responsible for the count’s defeat.

Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson…

The cast of this Nosferatu includes some well-known names. The film will notably feature Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, and Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok. We will also see Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, but also Willem Dafoe ! The latter has also shot a scene with two thousand rats, surrounded by flames ! We thus see that the director and his production team aim for authenticity, favoring practical scenes over special effects and computer-generated images. The filming, which took place mainly in Prague, offers gloomy environments which promise to truly immerse the viewer in the macabre world created by Eggers, with historical places such as Rožmitál Castle and the Invalidovna complex serving as a backdrop.

See you in early 2025

Willem Dafoe’s comments, calling the visual work of the director of “extraordinary”, add to the impatience of fans of the horrific kind. Remember that the original film, Nosferatu, released in 1922, is today considered a pillar of cinema, which laid the foundation for the horror genre for decades to come. At Vogue, Eggers declared his love for the 1922 masterpiece few months ago :

It’s an intimate horror film, a little crude in some ways – and yet, it’s one of the greatest films ever made. It contains a haunting depth. And while I admire the attempts to colorize the film, I prefer the black and white obtained from the 16mm prints.

While its release was initially planned for December 25, 2024, it is finally announced for January 1, 2025. We will therefore have to wait a bit to see Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård and Willem Dafoe in a film together!

Nosferatu is scheduled for January 1, 2025 in cinemas in France.
