In South Korea, this new feature film is stronger than the second chapter of Dune and already represents the highest-grossing film locally of 2024.

Dune 2 is a hit wherever it is, but it is not unbeatable everywhere. In South Korea in particular, Denis Villeneuve’s science fiction feature film earned $2.63 million during its second weekend of release. It’s a lot, but it’s less than a certain Exhumed, a film which did not reach our region and which earned 6.52 million dollars during the same period (or 67% of the overall box office market). It is directed by Jang Jae-hyun, who still only has four films under his belt, including the very niche Svaha: The Sixth Fingerstarring Squid Game star Jung-jae Lee.

The story of Exhuma is that of a wealthy family living in Los Angeles who calls on two young shamans to save their newborn baby, who they believe is the victim of a series of paranormal events. The film has been a hit locally for three weeks now, no doubt partly thanks to its star casting: we indeed find Min-sik Choi, star of the cult revenge film Old Boybut also Do-hyun Lee, whom you recently enjoyed in the Netflix series The Glory as well as Go-eun Kim, seen in Little Womendrama series also available on the SVOD platform.

No release in France?

The media Variety reports to us that after almost three weeks of release, the film has already earned $58.7 million for eight million admissions, making it the highest-grossing feature film of 2024 in South Korea. . Dune 2 signs for its part a total of 11 million dollars over 12 days. Unfortunately, no screenings in French-speaking countries are planned for Exhumed. Its release in Europe is still limited only to German-speaking territories. However, it is difficult to imagine that he could completely avoid France, which is very fond of South Korean productions.

The Rotten Tomatoes page does not yet offer any reviews of ”Exhuma”, but a quick look at the Letterboxd platform allows us to gather some opinions from spectators. Adam Putra in particular, who gives the film a nice score of 4/5, writes that it is “an impressive improvement on the part of Jang Jae-hyun, who had directed an unconvincing detective film, Svaha : The Sixth Finger (2022)””. He added: “”Exhuma is blood-curdling entertainment and certainly one of the most intriguing and exciting horror films South Korea has ever made.” Less convinced, a certain Al Pacino gives a score of 3.5/5, estimating that “the film is certainly brilliantly made, but it tries to juggle too many things, becoming more and more disordered as it goes on. that it advances over its excessively long duration.””

The Medium (2022)

In the same vein, if you are a fan of horror stories, Southeast Asian cinema and shaman stories, I can only recommend The Mediuma Thai feature film released in 2022 which presents itself as a mockumentary. We follow a film crew who sets off to shoot a documentary on shamanism in a village where Nim lives, a shaman possessed by a spirit that is passed down from generation to generation. Thrills guaranteed.
