The catalog of animated films and series Netflix is only getting bigger lately, with not only the announcements of Ultraman: Risingof Spellboundfrom a new film Sailor Moonand the next Wallace & Gromitbut also the long-awaited first images of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croftand of course Arcanathe favorite series for fans of the extended universe of League of Legends. But it’s a completely different work of animation which will soon arrive at the SVOD giant, and fans of Ghibli productions may be interested.

As you can see above, the film THE IMAGINATION will arrive on next July 5 on Netflix in a partnership that is expected to span multiple films. Hosted by the Studio Ponocthis feature film looks like it came out of Studio Ghibliand for good reason: its animators are veterans of the studio founded by Hayao Miyazakiand particularly its director, Yoshiyuki Momose, to whom we owe some masterpieces. Among the films he worked on, we find for example The Grave of the Fireflies, Spirited awayand even Ni no kuni. He was also part of the team that took care of derivative games, Ni no Kuni: Revenge of the Heavenly WitchAnd Ni no Kuni 2: Rise of a New Kingdom.

Imaginary friends die hard

As you may have noticed by watching the trailer above, THE IMAGINATION is a fantasy film that focuses on imaginary friends, and imagination in general. Based on The Imaginarya children’s book written by AF Harrold and illustrated by Emily Gravettthe film follows the adventures of Rudgeran imaginary boy created by a little girl named Amanda. Rudger lives in the girl’s attic, where the two children take part in adventures concocted by Amanda’s boundless imagination.

In this world, imaginary friends don’t last forever, and either end up being forgotten by their creators, or by being devoured by other imaginary beings. While Rudger finds himself alone, he ends up finding the City of Imaginary Creatures, a sanctuary for forgotten imaginary friends. There, the little boy makes discoveries about Amanda and the relationship they had, and decides to go looking for him before it is too late. But his journey risks being strewn with pitfalls, starting with the arrival of the mysterious Mr Bunting
