We want to create our own Star Wars. For us, what matters most is telling an original story with new ideas. The opposite has already been done too much. I think we’re in a writing routine that tends to repeat itself and perhaps overuses franchises. So, now I think audiences are hungry for new ideas and untold stories. And that’s where we want to go after Marvel. As for the question “what are these new stories?”, Barbie and Oppenheimer showed the audience’s appetite for something different.
So be careful, Joe Russo is not saying that they want to create a gigantic science fiction universe to compete with Star Wars, but rather that he and his brother want to create a brand new, beautiful extended universe… and obviously capable of lasting several generations. Just that.
