Culture news Zack Snyder and Netflix… it’s not over: the director of Rebel Moon reveals his new animated series

Despite the failure of his Rebel Moon diptych, Zack Snyder intends to make his return to Netflix! One of his new projects, an animated series, is also highly anticipated and promises to put the filmmaker back in the spotlight.

A promising series

It is on the sidelines of the Annecy Festival that Zack Snyder revealed the first images of his first animated series entitled Twilight of the Gods. Co-produced with the French studio Xilam (Oggy and the Cockroaches), this program aimed at an adult audience is a rereading of fantasy and Nordic mythology. And the least we can say is that the filmmaker’s style is recognizable, since between slow motion and sprays of blood, the show promises its share of action.

The series will tell the odyssey of Sigrid, an intrepid warrior, alongside her husband Leif, battling the hordes of the god Thor. A vengeful crusade that will require them to take on numerous challenges and face ruthless adversaries. Note that this is not Snyder’s first foray into the world of animation, since the man had already signed on to direct the family feature film The Kingdom of Ga’Hoole: The Legend of the Guardians in 2010 and which had rather succeeded in seducing the crowds. Twilight of the Gods will be available on September 19, exclusively on Netflix.

Director’s cut

If the return of Zack Snyder is so publicized, it is mainly due to the fact that its last two feature films for Netflix represented a great source of disappointment for the leaders of said SVOD platform. Having cost a total of nearly $166 million, the Rebel Moon diptych is far from having convinced the public, receiving feedback that is disappointing at best and negative at worst. Representing only around 45.3 million views in total, the investment/views ratio is far from pleasing the distributor who threatens to call into question a sequel project.

In fact, the American director had announced that the saga could include 6 episodes which were to launch a cinematographic universe including various other projects, in the same way as Star Wars. Zack Snyder could still have a card up his sleeve, since director’s cuts of the first two Rebel Moon are expected for this summer. An exercise in which the director excels, as evidenced by the success of that of Justice League, having reconciled fans with a previously criticized title. To be continued.
