Cupra: no longer call it Urban Rebel, but Raval

Any marketer will tell you that choosing a name is crucial to a successful product launch. The automobile is a perfect example with a few hiccups. While some manufacturers have opted for numbers, first names or surnames resulting from intense brainstorming, the Spanish Cupra has opted for Catalan regionalism.

Thus, the Cupra Born electric city car refers to a district of Barcelona (El Born), while the Terramar model is a tribute to the eponymous racing circuit, but also to one of the largest beaches in the seaside town of Sitgès. Finally, the latest addition to the Cupra brand, the Tavascan, bears the name of a village in the province of Lérida, still in Catalonia and about 8 km from the French border.

The exceptions are the Cupra Leon and Formentor. The first refers to the capital of the province of León (Castile and León). The second corresponds to a tiny peninsula at the northeast end of the island of Majorca.

Continuing on its good tourism momentum, Cupra has looked into the case of the Urban Rebel, the entry-level electric city car, a croquignolette replacement for the Seat Mii. From now on, his stage name will be Raval, a former red-light district located in the old town of Barcelona. Since then, the place has become trendy with its bars and exhibitions.

Same Volkswagen Group MEB platform

Like writing Digital had already written it during its presentation in June 2022, the Cupra Raval, ex-Urban Rebel, sports an aggressive style with bodybuilt sides, a grille ready to devour the asphalt, pretty rear lights barely thicker than a line of eyeliner, as well as a ribbed cap. The Spanish is based on the MEB platform of the Volkswagen group dedicated to electric vehicles.

A particular feature is its wheelbase, which is shorter at 2.60 m. On the technical side, it is 4 m long and incorporates a single 226 hp electric motor (0 to 100 km / h in 6.9 s). It is powered by a battery whose capacity is unknown, but which provides 400 km of autonomy. We will have to wait until 2025 to get our hands on this Iberian GTI.
