Customs fair – art and skill as heritage and perspective

The Carinthian customs fair is unique in Austria: three days, one hall for 2000 clubs and those interested in tradition.

Krampus is coming in a month, but only if he has a creepy mask in addition to fur, bells and chains. And carving them takes great talent, creativity, skill and constant learning. On these pillars stands the handicrafts of the mask carvers, who can be seen over their shoulders at the Carinthian customs fair. Reinhold and Ruth Gartner from Dellach an der Drau will be happy to show in Hall 4 how they make baskets from hazel. Other arts and crafts techniques such as fabric printing and Advent wreath making also attract visitors to this year’s even larger interactive area. An instrument maker also gives insights into his work there. Department 14 – Art and Culture – under Igor Pucker and the Arge Volkskultur under Heimo Schinnerl are organizing the 21st Customs Fair – and have considered some innovations. So the customs stage will be in the middle. Already after the opening of the fair, the carnival is awakened there. On Friday, folk music education at the music schools and the 40th anniversary of folk music education studies at the former conservatory and at today’s Gustav Mahler Private University are the focal points on the stage, on Saturday the presentation of the Jaun and Lesach Valleys. On Sunday, after the morning pint concert, ambassadors of folk culture will be honored and the Carinthian Lions and the Georg Bucher Prize will be awarded. Traditional fashion shows, dance, music and singing always provide a feast for the eyes and ears. Carinthian customs fair in exhibition hall 4 in Klagenfurt: Friday, November 11th to Sunday, November 13th (9 a.m. to 6 p.m.). A nativity scene exhibition presents the Christmas story from the point of view of different artisans: alpine, oriental, complex, reduced, in a glass bottle, made of tinfoil, straw, clay, roots… In the small houses of the traditional village you can find St. Nicholas, dolls, straw stars and lots of things about customs in the annual cycle. A Lavanttaler Piggale can be tasted as a pre-Christmas greeting. After a refreshment at the Carinthia stalls, collections, archives and the poetry of Carinthia want to be explored – because the legacy of the ancestors can give perspective for the future.
