Created in collaboration with CD Projekt Red, and planned specifically for Netflix, the Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime seems to have been an opportunity for the Trigger studio to give free rein to its creativity. Both visually, but also with the themes addressed. Edgerunners has a very distinct visual identity from other anime, and as the trailer shows, in addition to violence and a “bad trip” approach, nudity and sexual content were also ubiquitous. Not having to worry about censorship on Japanese TV channels certainly has something to do with it, and Trigger looks like it’s going a lot further than in Kill la Kill, one of its previous anime.
The great news is that the broadcast of Cyberpunk Edgerunners is very close, since it arrives on September 13, 2022 on Netflix. The 10 episodes will all be available at the same time, which should make binge watchers happy. A new poster for the anime has also been revealed, featuring one of the story’s key characters, Lucy the Netrunner.
Synopsis
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners tells the story of street kid David Martinez as he tries to survive in a futuristic city obsessed with technology and body modification. After a personal tragedy, he decides to regain control of his life by becoming an Edgerunner; an outlaw mercenary, also known as a cyberpunk.
He then meets Lucy, a very talented Netrunner, as well as one of the members of the Maine mercenary group. But despite her highly sought-after skills, she only wants one thing, to escape Night City and flee her past.
The team behind Edgerunners
For this project, the studio brought in veterans of the industry, who have worked on many notable anime, such as Hiroyuki Imaishi (Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, Promare) as director. Yoh Yoshinari (Little Witch Academia, BNA: Brand New Animal) as character designer and animation director. Masahiko Otsuka (Star Wars: Visions ‘The Elder’) and Yoshiki Usa (GRIDMAN UNIVERSE series) for composing. The surprise is that the story did not come from the studio, but was provided by CD PROJEKT RED. Finally, the composer is Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill series).
