The co-favorites Tadej Pogacar and Wout van Aert are at a disadvantage in the cycling monument from Milan to Sanremo. Mathieu van der Poel fought for victory thanks to an outstanding attack on Poggio.

All-rounder Mathieu van der Poel also lived up to his name in the cycling classic from Milan to Sanremo. With his success on the hilly course over 294 kilometers he got his 2nd victory at a monument – last year the Dutchman had triumphed at the Tour of Flanders.

This year, the man from Team Alpecin made the decisive move on the descent from Poggio: 5.5 kilometers before the finish, he left the strong competition behind, and in the end he managed to get a lead of 15 seconds and more.

In the duel of the currently best all-rounders, Filippo Ganna (ITA/Ineos) finished second, Wout van Aert (BEL/Jumbo-Visma) completed the podium. Meanwhile, it was a disappointment for Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates), the two-time Tour de France champion finished fourth.

Alaphilippe with a moment of shock

Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe experienced an incident without serious consequences. The Quick-Step athlete remained uninjured after his fall immediately halfway through the race and was able to catch up with the peloton again. In the end, the two-time road world champion was eleventh (+26 seconds).

The Swiss drivers were unable to set any accents. Johan Jacobs, as the best Swiss, finished 31st, 166 riders crossed the finish line.
