Cycling Tour of Italy: Tom Dumoulin throws in the towel in the 14th stage

After Romain Bardet on Friday, another well-known name in the peloton is leaving the Giro: hit in the back, Dutchman Tom Dumoulin, winner of the Tour of Italy in 2017, threw in the towel on Saturday in the 14th stage run in around Turin.

Dumoulin found himself in difficulty on the first of the five climbs of this stage, started at full speed at more than 43 km/h. Unlike the Frenchman, the Dutchman was already behind in the general classification. He was in 31st place more than 19 minutes behind the pink jersey, the Spaniard Juan Pedro Lopez.

The 31-year-old Jumbo team rider took third place in the time trial run in Hungary, during the second stage. But he gave up any claim to the general classification from the first arrival at the top, at Etna, during the 4th stage.

Since the Tour de France 2018, which he finished in second place after winning the time trial of the penultimate stage, Dumoulin has only one success to his credit, the time trial of the championship of Netherlands last year. However, he won the silver medal in the time trial at the Tokyo Olympics last summer.
