Sept 18 (Reuters) – Belgian Wout van Aert has signed a unique contract in cycling by committing until the end of his career with Visma-Lease a bike, the Dutch team announced on Wednesday.
“It’s unique in our sport, but we didn’t have to think about it for long,” said Richard Plugge, the boss of the Visma-Lease a bike team, in a statement.
Wout van Aert (30) joined the team in 2019 and was initially contracted until 2026. “I didn’t have to think long when this idea came up,” he said. “This team is unique and has suited me for five years and I want it to continue like this. That’s why I decided to stay here forever.”
With the Dutch team, the Belgian won the best of his 49 professional victories: nine stages of the Tour de France, Milan-San Remo 2020 and three stages of the last Tour of Spain which he abandoned due to a fall.
Seriously injured in the knee, he ended his season and will not participate in the World Road Championships, on September 29 in Zurich (Switzerland) for the road race, where he finished second in 2020 and 2023. (Written by Vincent Daheron, edited by Blandine Hénault)
