D-RAM / NAND: SK Hynix narrows the gap with Samsung in the third quarter


The NAND memory market witnessed slight growth in the third quarter due to production cuts by major players. SK Hynix, in particular, has narrowed the gap with industry leader Samsung Electronics by increasing shipments of high-capacity products.

According to market research firm TrendForce, the global NAND memory market size in the third quarter was $9.92 billion, an increase of 2.9% from the previous quarter.

“Large-scale production cuts by leading companies such as Samsung Electronics have prompted buyers to be more aggressive,” TrendForce said, adding that the market is expected to grow more than 20% in the fourth quarter. .

Strong demand for high-capacity products for PCs and smartphones

In this segment, Samsung is the leader with a market share of 31.4%. While shipments declined slightly during the quarter, revenue stabilized as the company increased its average selling price by focusing on high-value products. However, its market share decreased compared to the previous quarter (32.3%).

SK Hynix’s shipments increased due to strong demand for high-capacity products for PCs and smartphones. As a result, its third-quarter NAND sales increased 11.9% quarter-on-quarter, and its market share increased from 18.6% to 20.2% during the same period.

SK Hynix also narrowed the gap with Samsung Electronics in the D-RAM market. According to TrendForce, the total D-RAM market in the third quarter was $13.48 billion, an increase of approximately 18% quarter-on-quarter.

Samsung and SK Hynix hold 38.9% and 34.3% market share, respectively, during this quarter. The gap narrowed by 5 percentage points compared to the previous quarter (39.6% and 30.1%).
